  Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What browsers work best for this site?

A: This site is designed to work best with Internet Explorer 5.5 SP1 or higher (Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5). This site is designed to also support Netscape Navigator 4.05 or higher, although it should work with any browser that supports Java 1.1 and JavaScript. It also works with Opera 3.5, IE 4.5 for Macintosh browsers.

Q: Why don't the colored column and row backgrounds print? A: In IE 4.0 & Opera background printing is turned off by default.
  • To turn background printing on in IE choose "Internet Options..." from the "View Menu". Then click the "Advanced" tab. Scroll down until you see the section titled "Printing" and check the option titled "Print background colors and images".
  • To turn background printing on in Opera choose "Print Scale and Margins..." from the "File" menu. Then check the "Print Background" box.

Q: Why don't my charts and graphs print exactly the way they look on the screen? A: Printing Java applets is a relatively new feature for browsers and is only supported by IE 4.0 and Netscape 4.05. To print the entire line chart, you may need to print in landscape mode.

Q: Why does the floating text "No drill down" appear when my mouse pointer is over a pie chart or a graph legend? A: The text "No drill down" appears when no further levels of detail are available.

Q: What is the thick black bar on the left side of the trend charts? A: The bar is the zoom factor you are currently using.
  • To zoom in: shift-right click or press "Page Down"
  • To zoom out: right click or press "Page Up"
  • To scroll up and down press the left and right arrow keys or drag the black "thumb" that appears after you zoom in.
  • Another method for zooming in is to drag a selection rectangle around the data points you want to zoom in on with the mouse.

Q: How can I rotate my pie chart so I can see the labels better? A: Click and drag a pie segment label to rotate the pie chart.

Q: Why doesn't the text in the scrolling textbox wrap? A: Netscape Navigator 4.03 and 4.04 have incomplete support for the Java Virtual Machine 1.1. To remedy this we have provided a backwards compatible (but inconvenient) text box so that you can see the information. The solution is to download the JDK 1.1 support patch from Netscape.

Q: Why doesn't anything happen after I change one of the combo boxes (drop down menus) on the graph or data table page? A: JavaScript must be turned on for this feature to work correctly. Check your brower settings.

Q: Why does it take so long for the charts to display the first time? A: Since the charts are displayed using Java, the Java program must be downloaded to your computer. We have made every effort to minimize the size of the download, but it could take a minute or two, especially over a slow connection like a modem.

Q: Why do I need Java/JavaScript? A: Although Java and JavaScript are not required to view this site, the information will be much more interesting and interactive with Java enabled. For instance, without Java you will not be able to see the charts and graphs. Without JavaScript you will not have the ability to view the local government data.
